Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a neurobehavioral disorder in which people have obsession and compulsions that are time consuming, distressing, or interfere with normal routines, relationships with orhers, or daily functioning. Once considered rare, OCD is increasingly being diagnosed in both children and adults and is now one of the most common mental disorders in the United States. The good news is that there is hope and help for people with OCD.
Behavioral therapies have been used successfully for many years, but treatment with medication has recently received increased attention. There are prescription medications for OCD. Medications that potently inhibit reuptake of serotonin, such as SSRIs, are the drugs of choice in the treatment of patients with OCD. One of specific SSRIs that have been indicated for OCD by the FDA is Zoloft.
All medicines have side effects, including Zoloft. Several side effects are dry mouth, nausea, sexual side effects, diarrhea, insomnia, and sleepiness. Zoloft birth defects, heart defects, and pulmonary hypertension are several serious side effects related with Zoloft.
