Every month you spend money on electricity, water, and water heating. Supplying hot water for bathing and washing clothes and dishes is an important need that you require not only for cold days but all year.
Water heating is one of the largest expenses in a home. As much as 20 percent of the energy used in our homes heats our water for washing and bathing. There are a number of ways you can reduce water heating cost.
- You can reduce your monthly water heating bills by selecting the appropriate water heater for your home or pool and by using some energy-efficient water heating strategies.
- Wrapping your water heater and insulating any exposed hot-water pipes can reduce your annual hot- water bill by 15 percent.
- Lower the thermostat on your water heater: water heaters sometimes come from the factory with high temperature settings. A thermostat setting over 140F is wasteful and can even be dangerous in a shower, but a setting of 120F provides comfortable hot water for most uses.
- When washing clothes, conserving hot water is the key to saving. You could be throwing money away by running your dishwasher and washing machine at excessively high temperatures.
