All ants can bite, but the ant that most often causes painful bites is the fire ant. Fire ants are serious agricultural and urban pests that readily sting and bite. Fire ants build large, hard-crusted mounds in cultivated fields. These insects are very aggressive and will attack you for defending their territory. The fire ants sting provokes a painful burning sensation, which earned these insects their common name. Sometimes, ants bite when people roll onto them in bed.

If you are stung by fire ants, carefully brush them off as best you can to prevent repeated stings and the retreat from the area. Treatment of fire ant bite consists of immediately scrubbing the wounds with soap and water, but avoid scratching fire ant bite site to prevent infection. Apply ice to the bite to help numb the area and relieve pain, then follow up with applications of an ointment containing antihistamine.
