Water heating is one of the largest expenses in a home. As much as 20 percent of the energy used in our homes heats our water for washing and bathing. There are a number of ways you can reduce water heating cost.

• You can reduce your monthly water heating bills by selecting the appropriate water heater for your home or pool and by using some energy-efficient water heating strategies.
• Wrapping your water heater and insulating any exposed hot-water pipes can reduce your annual hot- water bill by 15 percent.
• Lower the thermostat on your water heater: water heaters sometimes come from the factory with high temperature settings. A thermostat setting over 140F is wasteful and can even be dangerous in a shower, but a setting of 120F provides comfortable hot water for most uses.
• When washing clothes, conserving hot water is the key to saving. You could be throwing money away by running your dishwasher and washing machine at excessively high temperatures.
